Monarch

About

Co Theatre Physical bring you MONARCH, a show for primary schools about butterflies and the environment. The show mixes story-telling, vivid characters, comedy, physical theatre and scientific information.

Carlo the caterpillar has eaten so much and it is time for him to change into his chrysalis but he is afraid and thinks he has claustrophobia.

Nina the butterfly’s new wings have finally dried off in the sun so she stretches and soars into the sky.

8 year old Lea hopes Nina won’t land on a swan plant covered in pesticide. Some growers have used pesticide to produce greater quantities of swan plants. Lea and her scientist Grandma work on butterfly survival.

Legends from other countries about the significance of butterflies are remembered by Grandma. They involve romance, loss, and inspiration. Butterflies represent transformation.

Lea has to talk to her school about butterfly survival. Like a scientist she gathers evidence about butterflies to inform her school. She knows that looking after the environment will help butterflies.

Female scientists from the past interrupt Lea’s speech! Scientists who were not recognized want their voices to be heard. Should Lea let them speak?

Butterfly survival, inter-generational partnerships, inspiration from the past, will Lea gather enough scientific evidence to convince her school mates to change?
